...and all of the South East
There are four main types of woodworm in the UK, all of which we have spotted in London and if this is your first time learning about woodworm, you might be surprised to learn that they are all beetles. The reason for this is that “woodworm” is not actually a species in itself, but is instead the collective name used for the whole range of wood boring beetles. The beetles do spend most of their life, up to about 6 years, in the larval stage eating through wood, whereas they only spend a few days or weeks as adult beetles. It's not as misleading as it may first seem to call them woodworm therefore. However it does depend on the type of beetle that you are dealing with as to what the best woodworm treatment course will be.
Woodworm Types
Whether you need woodworm treatment in London, or anywhere else, it helps to be identify the species that you are dealing with.
- Common Furniture Beetle – This is one of the most common forms of woodworm (hence the name) but does not only attack furniture (unfortunately). It can cause a lot of damage, and if it has got into the timber which is supporting your house you could have a real problem. The exit holes (from which the adult beetle finally emerges) are approximately 2mm in diameter. If you suspect you might have an infestation of the common furniture beetle, call in pest control experts immediately. They will be able to properly identify the species of woodworm involved, and discover the extent of the infestation. They will also be able to apply woodworm treatment of course.
- Death Watch Beetle – The presence of the death watch beetle will most likely indicate that you have a problem with damp in your house. They tend only to attack decaying hard wood, or softwood as well if it is connected to hardwood. Therefore to get rid of the infestation you will not only have to treat for the woodworm, which may require fumigation, but treat the problem of damp as well. Their exit holes are approximately 3mm in diameter.
- Wood Boring Weevil – Similarly to the death watch beetle, the wood boring weevil only attacks decaying wood, in particular wood which is suffering from wet rot. Whilst this is bad news, the good news is that the only treatment which is required is to get rid of the rotten wood, as they cannot attack healthy wood. Exit holes tend to be about 1mm across and ragged.
- House Longhorn Beetle – Woodworm treatment in London should not be necessary, as this species is generally only found (admittedly close by) in Surrey. Unfortunately they can cause extensive damage if you do have an infestation, and you will have very little evidence for it on the outside of the wood. If treatment is required, any wood which is already too damaged should be taken away, and insecticide should be applied to any surviving wood. Exit holes tend to be large, oval and ragged, about 6-10mm in diameter.
